Helen M. Hoover, born on April 5th, is one of the better writers of science fiction for young people. Most of her books are set in the future.
The setting for The Rains of Eridan is a scientific expedition on a new world. The characters, Theo and Leslie, pursue the reason why the Eridan expedition is gripped by a growing irrational panic. Eventually, Theo and Leslie come to appreciate Eridan for its beauty, not just its potential for profit.
The main character in Return to Earth is Samara Lloyd. When her mother is assassinated, she takes over the directorship of Continental Lloyd Corporation (North America). The plot follows her battle with the Dolmen, who probably caused her mother's death.
The Delikon is also set in the future. The Delikon have conquered earth in order to re-educate the people to their advanced technology. The alien Delikon children have taken on a human form. They are in charge of raising the human children to be earth's future leaders.
In her writing, Hoover chooses to make sure that the reader understands the moral of the story. Her better novels focus on the human rather than the technical side of her imaginary futures.
